When buying a new baseball glove, it's essential to ensure it fits properly. A glove that is too tight or too loose will not perform as well as one that is properly fitted. Let us explain how a baseball glove should fit and tell you what to look for when buying one. Let's get started!
Glove Fitment 101
Picking out a new baseball glove is an essential decision for any player. With so many factors to consider, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. However, there is one factor that trumps them all—the fit. A glove that doesn’t fit properly will never perform as well as one that does. That’s why it’s so important to take the time to find a glove that fits snugly on your hand. It should be snug around the fingers with no excess movement. The glove should not slide around on your hand. If you can find a glove that meets these criteria, you’re well on finding the perfect one.
Sizing Your Own Glove
Regardless of what position you play in baseball, having a good glove is essential. The first step in finding the proper fitment of a glove for you is to start by looking at your current glove. Baseball makers usually etch the size into either the thumb or pinky finger of their gloves. The size is measured from the top of the index finger to the bottom of the heel and is given in inches. There are also half sizes available for people who fall between sizes. Once you have your size, try on several different brands and styles of gloves to find one that feels comfortable and gives you the range of motion you need. With so many options available, there's no reason to settle for a second-rate glove. With a little effort, you can find the perfect glove for you.
Sizing By Position
In baseball, each field position has an associated glove style for that. Depending on the position, those measurements are going to vary. Let's go over the basics of sizing for gloves by position. (quick note, sizing varies by position, but it also varies by the age range playing. Younger people are, on average, smaller and require smaller gloves. That said, the age range I will focus on is 7 and under, then 14 and up, which includes adult sizing):
Pitcher:
- 7 and Under- 8″ to 10.5″
- 14 and Up- 11.5″ to 12″
Catcher:
- 7 and Under- 29.5″ to 30″
- 14 and Up- 32″ to 34.5″
First Base:
- 7 and Under- 11.5″
- 14 and Up- 12″ to 13″
Third Base:
- 7 and Under- 8″ to 10.5″
- 14 and Up- 11.5″ to 12″
Infield:
- 7 and Under- 8″ to 10.5″
- 14 and Up- 11.25″ to 11.5″
Outfield:
- 7 and Under- 9″ to 10.5″
- 14 and Up- 12″ to 13″
Each position has its style of glove, and there are multiple variations of everything now. We have gone over positional gloves in the past, so you can reference that for the glove style based on your position; then, you can use this sizing reference to make an informed decision.
